Argument Paper Guidelines

Length: 850 words

For this assignment, you will write a rebuttal, a kind of argumentative paper. The main difference between a rebuttal and other kinds of arguments is that a rebuttal responds directly to the points made in another argument or target text. In short, your job is to counter - that is argue against - the target text. Please write a rebuttal targeting “The Evil Queen as a Feminist Figure: An Analysis of Traditional Folk and Fairy Tales,” which can be found in Chapter 23 of your textbook.

Make sure to read the chapter section “Microgenre: The Rebuttal,” which can be found in Chapter 8 of your textbook. In writing your rebuttal please closely follow the structure below.

Argument Essay Structure

  • Introduction:

  • 1 Paragraph

  • Start with grabber

  • Offer basic background on the general topic of target text

  • Introduce target text and state its thesis

  • State your - underlined - thesis at end of introductory paragraph

  • Summary of Target Text Argument:

  • 1 Paragraph

  • Summarize general argument of the target text but focus on key area(s) you will dispute

  • Define or explain key terms/ideas if necessary

  • Supporting Evidence Paragraph #1:

  • Topic sentence (underline)

  • Provide evidence (reasons, examples, quotations, facts, etc.)

  • Include at least one underlined and italicized concession

  • Explain evidence (how it proves your topic point/thesis – as you would do in a quotation frame comment)

  • Point sentence (see Ch. 26 of your textbook for more info. about point sentences)

  • Supporting Evidence Paragraph #2,3 etc.:

  • Repeat above – remembering to use transitions

  • Conclusion:

  • Restate thesis - but rephrase it

  • Make other concluding moves (optional – see Ch. 16, WT)

This is not designed as a research assignment; all of the argumentative ideas in this essay should be your own or those discussed in class.
