PHYSICS II LABORATORY MANUAL
EXPERIMENT 3
VOLTAGE, CURRENT AND RESISTANCE II (OHM’s LAW)
Objective: To measure current and voltage in various type of circuits and understanding Ohm’s law.
Materials:
Phet Simulations DC virtual Kit
Resistors with various resistance values
Ampermeter
Voltmeter
DC source, a battery ( 0- 120 V)
Theoretical Background:
Procedure:
Open Phet simulations Circuit construction kit DC virtual lab
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-dc-virtual-lab.
Use a battery. You can give any supply voltage (between 1-120 V)
Place 3 different value resistors in series and decide their values by yourself ( between 1-120 Ohm) like the first figure in table 1.
Put an ammeter near the power source so, measure the main current
Measure each voltage given in the table.
Then using Ohm’s law compare these measured values with your calculated voltage values. You do not need to show all percentage errors. Just write some explanations of what you observed in the result and conclusion part.
Do the same procedures ( 2,3,4,5,6) for parallel combination parts in table 1. But do not forget to measure current in each branch of wire.
Table 1
Like figures in table 2. In this time we place ammeters and measure currents. You can use the previous table 1 voltages to find theoretical currents to check measured ones.
Do it series and parallel combination. Fill table 2 with your measured values. Also, check with your theoretical current values by using Ohm’s law. You should show your calculations.
Table 2
Find the power dissipated to each resistor by using I2R or V2/R.
