Periodical Analysis

Use these guiding questions to help you analyze each of the articles presented in the project for this competency. Each of the analysis documents you complete should be 300–500 words in length and make reference to specific parts of the article. You may include direct quotes from the articles using appropriate in-text citations. (See the Citing Your Sources website for more information.) Be sure to use correct grammar, spelling, writing conventions, tone, and style to suit your audience.

Guiding Questions:

  • Identify where the writer uses overly positive or overly negative language about the subject.

  • Where does the writer use emotionally charged language about the subject?

  • Where does the writer use vague or generalized language about the subject?

  • What important facts does the writer seem to leave out?

  • What additional information and evidence does the writer include that seems unnecessary and is used simply to bolster the point?

  • Does the writer fail to properly cite their sources?

  • Should this periodical be included in the library’s collections? If yes, provide two reasons why it should be included, and if not, provide two reasons why it should not be included.
