Egg Drop Capstone Project

Introduction

The Egg Drop Capstone Project is a multi-week individual assignment with weekly assignments and a final assignment. Students will design a structure capable of catching a free-falling raw egg without causing any damage to the egg including any cracks.

In order to develop the project, students will use most of the concepts and contents presented during the course with emphasis on the engineering design process and conservation of energy.

Students will also be required to demonstrate their ability to learn by themselves by doing research about a topic, not presented in class, but fundamental for understanding and developing the project. Be a leaner is one of the most important attributes of a successful engineer and shows the reality of daily engineering work.

You are going to develop the structure to catch the egg using only two materials:

  1. plastic straws; and

  2. masking tape.

Masking tape cannot be used to any purpose other than to hold the straws in place. Straws are the structural elements and the masking tape are the joins.

You should design an optimum structure capable to catch the egg falling from a height of 6 feet. The optimum structure is the one who uses the minimum amount of resources (straws and tape) and as such being the lightest. The structure must also be reliable being able to catch the falling egg from 6 ft repeatedly, at least 5 times, without any damage. The structure should also be easily maintainable.

Project reports must be typed and follow the Best Practices for Technical Writing guidelines presented under Course Resources menu in BB. As being an guideline any specification specific to this project, presented in here, supersedes the Technical Writing guidelines in case of a conflict. Citations and references must be provided in the reports. You must use Verdana font size 11 with 1.15 as line spacing. You must use the International System of Units - SI in your report. You can use the Customary System - IPS American system in your calculations but not in the final report. You must use prefixes not scientific or engineering notation in your report. This report specs must be used in all reports.

Specifications

Straws: You should purchase a pack of 250 reusable drinking black straws 7 ¾ inches long. You can cut the straw if needed to construct the structure. The mass of each straw is 0.5 grams.

It retails in Amazon for US$ 5.99. You can purchase at any location you would like. Here is the straw link for reference. You cannot use bendable straws or any other type of straw. You can use straws of different color but of the same specs.

Masking tape: You should purchase one roll of 0.7 in by 54.6 yards of any brand, having 5.6 ounces per 60 yards.

It retails in Amazon for US$ 3.99. You can purchase at any location you would like. Here is the tape link for reference. You can purchase a masking tape roll with a different length but not different width.

Eggs: To test your structure you should use medium raw white eggs. The mass of the egg must be taken as 60 grams for this project. You can use as many eggs you would like.

As an alternative for those who prefer not to use real eggs you can use plastic eggs instead. Make sure you fill the egg with any material to reach the required 60 grams per egg. You still must consider in your structure design that the egg can crack although your plastic egg will not. Here an Amazon link to purchase the plastic eggs. It retails for US$ 8.98. You can buy it from any other merchant you like.

Observations:

  • It should be clear by now based upon the above specifications that you will need to apply the contents presented in the course: conversion of units; prefixes, significant figures, and rounding.

  • The structure target area (place where the egg hits first the structure) must be big enough to make sure you can hit it when dropping the egg from 6 ft while holding the egg in your hand.

  • You cannot protect the egg in any way. You cannot surround or wrap the egg with any material nor can you create a capsule to place the egg in. This means you cannot create any structure that surrounds the egg.

  • You must use the structure target area height as you reference level for energy computations.

  • The structure must be placed in a hard floor (no on carpet or grass) to perform the testing.

  • A mattress type design (bed) is not a desirable design outcome.

Plastic and Elastic Deformation Technical Report

You should research the topic: Plastic and Elastic Deformation. You should learn the basics of it and be able to understand how force and energy are related to deformation.

You should write a two to three pages technical report which includes a list of references. You should summarize your findings and must present a reflection/conclusion on whether plastic straws are or not a good material to use in this project. You should assess how the plastic straw properties relate to the concepts you learned about plastic and elastic deformation and how this plays a role in catching a falling egg without causing any damage.

You must present in your reflection/conclusion section of your report what is the expected maximum energy value the platform is expected to absorb. Show your work.
