Fro m 1971 to 1 990, th e c o untr y ’s a n nual a v era g e g ro w th in G NP w as 6 .8 p er c en t w it h th e m ajo r e x p ort o f p alm o il, ti m ber, r u b ber tin a n d o il. W ith th e P rim e M in is te rs h ip o f T un D r M ah ath ir in 1981, th e N EP sa w th e cre atio n of s ig nif ic a n t in cre a se in b um ip utr a c o m merc ia l, i n d ustr ia l a n d pro fe ssio nal co m muniti e s.
