Introduction

The United Kingdom is four countries in one, consisting of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Each country has its own history and culture. Each country also has its own national sports teams, its own laws and education systems (McCormick, 2018). The capital is London, which is among the world’s leading commercial, financial, and cultural centres.

Tension of Britishness

In 1951, only 0.2 percent of the population was not white. In the past, mostly white people immigrated from New Zealand, Canada and Australia. But in the early 1980s, immigration from Pakistan, India and the Caribbean increased, resulting in 4 percent of the population now nonwhites. Which in turn led to the tension from the “white man” who blames the country’s declining economy on the non-white man (McCormick, 2018). The nonwhites were accused of being the cause of the country's economy collapsing. Despite this, a new wave of immigrants came from Hungary and Kenya in the early 1970s. It is worth adding that the government produced new laws that would reduce and limit immigration between 1962 and 1971 (McCormick, 2018). People now began to talk about the country suffering from a “British disease”. The unrest in the country increased where the right blames socialism, pilgrimage and the high taxes. While the left thinks it’s strange that countries like Sweden and France where they have invested in pilgrimage and have high tariffs have not been affected by insurgency and racism. The citizens of the country protest through violent uprisings and protests where they had to call in the military. Despite military action, it tracked down terrorist groups, civilians killed and injured, bombings and street violence. Today, the ethnic multicultural society is an important part of British culture. Whit help from the film industry, culture and the new religious diversity has reduced racism. Today, it is mostly older residents who remember class differences, race, financial crisis and social differences. The younger Britain does not put much focus on what has been for the country and enjoys Asians culture (McCormick, 2018).

After reading the literature I understand that British history is very complex. It has participated in world wars that have taken a heavy toll on the economy and unemployment. It has been countries how have fought for humans rights over the years. Not only worlds wars but also against terrorism. I understand that the economy has fluctuated rapidly as it has also flourished in the country through a successful industry.
