GitLab and the Future of All-Remote Work (A)

Step 1: Study chapter reading, video lecture, and required video for this Module.

Step 2: Read the case. Then discuss case questions with your group members and work with each other to develop group answers to the following questions:

  1. What approaches did GitLab use to facilitate communication and collaboration in asynchronous work? What are some challenges they encountered?

  2. Case reading pp. 7-8: In these pages, the case reading addresses some strategies and challenges in building a culture with the all-remote work model. In your group’s own original thinking, do you think it is possible to build a unique and productive company culture (i.e., a set of coherent norms, values, and missions that all members share) with an all-remote work design? Why and why not?

  3. Applying your learning from the textbook chapter: What are three top competencies most needed in employees if they were to excel on all-remote jobs (text: pp. 176-180)? What types of job rewards are particularly important for employees who work on all-remote jobs (text: pp. 182-183, p. 186)?

  4. Applying your learning from class lecture on job design: Discuss one important way to design remote jobs so that they are more intrinsically motivating.
