According to MLA formatting guidelines, all citations on a Works Cited page must be in “hanging indent,” which means that the second line (and any other lines after that) of a citation must be indented a certain number of spaces. This handout explains the steps one should take to properly format a citation in hanging indent. 1. Open Microsoft Word. 2. You’ll be using the Microsoft ruler for this, so if the ruler is not automatically showing beneath your toolbar at the top of the page, click on the “View” tab and choose “Ruler” in the toolbar. 3. Place your cursor at the beginning of the second line of your citation; then on the ruler, grab the bottom half the “hourglass,” which will be lined up on your left margin, and pull the bottom half of the hourgl ass over to the right approximately four “ticks” (i.e. halfway between the left margin and the “1” on the ruler). This will pull the second line (and all other lines in the citation after that) over to the right the correct number of spaces, thereby leavi ng only the first line of the citation on its original left margin. 4. Your citation is now in hanging indent.
