What are problems affecting your local community? In order to answer this question, you will investigate a problem happening in your area and attempt to resolve the problem with solutions.
Some examples: curfew issues, drug use, driving without insurance, unemployment, serious crime, dilapidated bridges and/or highways, public transportation, affordable health care, pollution, child sex trade/human trafficking, violence against women, homelessness, gang violence, alcoholism, drunk driving, dilapidated bridges and/or highways, public transportation, animal cruelty, prostitution, overcrowded jails, juvenile crime, sex offenders, recycling, clean water, funding for education, taxes, etc. Remember: The local community means where you live, work, go to school, buy groceries, go to the movies, go shopping; in other words, it is where you socialize with others and spend your money. |
Your three-to-four page paper should be both informative and attempt to find solutions to a serious problem affecting your local community. Your writing purposes are to (a) educate your readers about the topic you chose and (b) to share the solutions you feel will be most effective. Your essay must include the following parts in order to receive a passing grade:
A heading (MLA style)
An introductory paragraph with a thesis statement
Body paragraphs that:
provide support: facts, examples, details
use solutions that are concrete and obtainable
have purpose and intent
A concluding paragraph
At least three sources—must be credible sources: in-text citation required
All web sources must be from credible websites that have passed the three principles of credibility for websites: authorship/sponsorship, content, purpose
One source must be from a library database (e.g. Academic OneFile, NexisLexis, Research Library also known as ProQuest)
A Works Cited page for all sources referred to as you wrote the essay
MLA documentation style—including appropriate page numbering and in-text citations of all ideas/facts/statistics/dates/numbers/percentages/specific and/or information that is not considered common knowledge
Students must have peer feedback through the Writing Center tutoring service or with the peer feedback form from a classmate or credible writing professional
Students must submit a rough draft by the assigned due date
The final copy must be submitted into Canvas by the assigned due date.
