Assignment: Discussion Board (400-600) word.

Learning Style, Personality, and Contemplating in Community

Comb through the videos, readings, and questions in the preceding pages and compose a 400-600 word post that discusses your personal learning styles, personality composition, views on contemplation, and how these compositional elements might inform your relationship with our learning community.

The post should include APA-style citations of at least three (3) sources from this week's materials.

Your initial post will be followed by at least 3 thoughtful responses to your colleagues' posts due by midnight Sunday*.

***The due date of this assignment reflects your initial post. And, this timing rhythm will remain fairly consistent during our 7 weeks together: initial post by Wednesday night. Three replies by Friday night.

The Liberal Art of Lifelong Learning and Why it's Amazing

Lifelong learning is the intentional process of pursuing lines of inquiry as adults for personal or professional reasons. I suspect it's what brought many of you to SHU. Perhaps you're trying to advance in your career, move into a new one, or something else.

These two videos elaborate on the value of Liberal Arts and how they serve lifelong learning:

Illuminating the Spectrum of Personality and Learning Style

  • Personality has a lot to do with how we learn and interact with the world.

    • Take this personality assessment, and record your results to share in this week's discussionhttps://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test Links to an external site.

      • I highly recommend making an account (it's free) and saving a detailed version of your personality profile to return to later. They will also send inspiring periodic emails to your account if you wish.

Practical Resources for Note-taking and Organizing Info:

Finding a system of note-taking and information organization that works for your personality and learning style is vital. Whether you keep a compsition notebook, a file in Goodnotes, a running word doc, a collection of voice memos, or something else-- make sure that it works for you AND that you're taking good notes of your process throughout the next 7 weeks. We'll pull from these notes during the weekly discussions, and they will also help with the construction of your personal mission statement.

  • Many of you may have heard of SMART planning. For those of you who are new to the idea or who need a refresher, please check this out (Links to an external site.)

  • Consider your own time orientation (Links to an external site.) and include your responses and insights in our first discussion.

Creativity is an essential component of learning. Jim Kwik has some practical wisdom that can help anyone access their creativity:

Another key component of lifelong learning is curiosity. Cultivating and nourishing your capacity for curiosity is at the heart of lifelong learning. There are many ways to go about doing this.

Curate Your Personal Library

"The goal of an antilibrary is not to collect books you have read so you can proudly display them on your shelf; instead, it is to curate a highly personal collection of resources around themes you are curious about. Instead of a celebration of everything you know, an antilibrary is an ode to everything you want to explore. "  (Le Cunff. Building and Antilibreary: The Power of Unread Books. https://nesslabs.com/antilibrary Links to an external site.)

The Library, or as Le Cunff calls it: the antilibrary, can include far more than simply books or magazines, it can span to LPs, movies, Lego sets, globes, recipes, art, craft supplies ...

While the guts of this essay are quite moving, I'm personally kind of miffed by the "anti" and tend to believe that this article is just describing the purpose of a LIBRARY ... what do you think of "antilibrary" as opposed to "library"? Dissenting thoughts welcome.

What kind of lifelong learning library would you like to curate? What might be included in it?

Are Liberal Arts the Answer to Bullshit Jobs?
