Summer Novel Assignments 2016 Exiting Grade 6 Respond: Students will respond to a variety of comprehension questions ranging among the literal, interpretive, and critical levels.

These questions will require the use of higher order skills and citing of evidence from the text. Create: Students will choose one of the following interdisciplinary activities to complete. 1. In this novel, Bloor parallels three set of brothers: Erik and Paul, Mike and Joey, and Luis and Tino. Write an essay that compares and contrasts the differences and similarities of the relationships that these brothers share. 2. Paul is cut from the soccer team because he is visually impaired. Find out the laws concerning students and school sports to determine if the coach was acting within the law and compose a persuasive essay using your evidence in support or against Paul’s participation in soccer. 3. Write a speech explaining how lightning is formed and guidelines for athletes and fans to avoid injury from lightning. 1. Explain why Erik’s family moved to Florida. 2. Describe the Erik Fisher Football Dream. 3. Describe the events surrounding the death of Mike Costello. 4. Why did Erik’s football records get wiped out of the record books? 5. How did Paul lose his sight and how did the Fishers deal with the situation? 6. Why do Paul’s parents ignore Erik’s cruelty? 7. Why is Paul transfixed by the Boy Who Never Grew ? 8. What commentary is the author making about sports in American life? 9. What does the lightening and muck fire symbolize? 10. How would you describe the Fishers, their values and priorities? Submit: Students will submit responses to the questions and their completed project on September 19, 2016 to their Language Arts teacher.
