Essay Prompt:

Which mindset from Carol Dweck’s “Brainology”—fixed or growth—has most shaped you as a student thus far? How and why has that mindset impacted you?

Illustrate your response with concrete evidence from both personal experiences and Dweck's "Brainology" article which you can find under week 2.  At least three quotes from the article should be integrated into the body paragraphs. An MLA formatted Work Cited page is required. The word limit for your five paragraphs should be 600-700 words.

 

Guidelines:

NOTE: Make sure you submit your first draft by the due date so that system could automatically assigned you the peer reviews. So, timings is REALLY REALLY important. After submitting your first draft, you will be assigned to complete two peer reviews by Monday 11:59pm.

You will need to organize the essay with the following elements:

  • An effective introduction that clearly summarizes the author’s main idea and supporting points (all in your own words) and clearly builds to the thesis.

  • An effective thesis statement (1-2 sentences) that makes a claim in direct response to the prompt

  • Include at least 3 main points to support your thesis.

  • Body paragraphs organized with clear topic sentences

  • Specific supporting evidence from both personal experience and the text in the body paragraphs

  • At least 3 quotes from the article are effectively integrated to illustrate your points

  • Paragraphs organized logically to support the thesis

  • Effective use of transitional words and phrases to connect paragraphs and sentences

  • An effective conclusion reinforces the thesis and points to a larger significance of the essay’s point (i.e. answer’s the “So What?”).

  • Consistently clear, complete sentences with virtually no sentence-level errors that distract the reader or distort the essay’s meaning. A reader can easily understand the writer’s ideas.

  • A unique title that predicts the topic and main point of your essay

  • MLA format (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins)

  • Essay should be 3-4 pages.

 

Draft Grading Criteria:

You will receive full credit for your draft IF you submit a 5 paragraph essay, which includes:

  • Introduction paragraph (5 pts)

  • Three body paragraphs (15 pts)

    • 1 piece of evidence per paragraph

    • 1 example from your personal experience to connect to the topic

  • Conclusion paragraph (5 pts)

  • MLA Format (5 pts)
