Reading Analysis Assignment 2 Instructions

It is intended to engage your analytical and critical reading and thinking. Reading critically is an invaluable skill and one that requires practice. Assess everything you read, as even very good scholarly research and writing will have gaps, biases, and assumptions (none of which are inherently bad). Some studies you may find to be controversial or challenging in their concepts or in their collection and use of data. But remember being challenged = an opportunity for learning.

This is the second of two reading analysis assignments you will complete this term.
Late papers without approved extensions may not be accepted.

See the Course Outline for information on extension requests

1. Select Your Reading to Analyze

Students select one of the following required readings to analyze for this first assignment:

    • Goodman, M. & S. Jaworska (2020) Mapping digital foodscapes: digital food influencers and the grammars of good food. Geoforum. 117:183-193.

2. Completing Your Reading Analysis

Answer the questions listed below for the reading you have selected to analyze.

  • Responses to all questions should be in full sentences and paragraphs; DO NOT use bullet points

  • Use the spelling and grammar check function in MSWord, and always proofread your work before submitting it for grading!

  • Answer each question in direct and clear language.

  • Do not cut & paste in diagrams, figures or tables.

  • Avoid the excessive use of direct quotes. A quote should only be used if it is exceptional.

    • Ensure that you use in-text citation correctly if you do use a quote: (author name(s), year of publication: PAGE NUMBER)

  • Use examples and other details from the reading you are analyzing, but do so using your own words.

  • Correctly reference the article you are reviewing in a header at the top of your report, along with your name and the course title. APA format only.

  • DO NOT INCLUDE A TITLE PAGE.

  • Reviews are not to exceed 4 pages in length, single-spaced. Less than 2 pages means you have not adequately addressed the questions in this assignment. Use standard fonts and spacings.

  • INCLUDE the review question numbers in your assignment. This ensures your instructor knows which question is being addressed.

    • DO NOT write this assignment as an essay – it will not be accepted.

3. Submitting Your Assignment

Once you have completed your assignment

  • Check the spelling and grammar

  • Submit your final version of your assignment to the correct Assessment / Assignments folder in UM Learn for this course.

    • Only one file may be submitted

    • DO NOT submit your assignment to the professor’s email unless directed to do so

  2. What concepts, theories, factors or issues form the basis for the research conducted? Describe each in turn. Which ONE do you find most interesting or important, and why? (NB. There could be multiple concepts etc., informing the research being presented in the reading)

  3. What research methods are used by the author(s)? Describe 1) the methods that were used to collect data or information, and 2) the methods used to analyze the information/data collected to arrive at findings/conclusions.

  4. Were reasons provided for the author(s) choice of using the research methods that they did, and were they explained sufficiently for readers to understand what was done and why? Use examples/details from the reading to explain your answer. (*Remember that researchers are writing for an audience expected to have some methodological knowledge.)

  5. Describe in detail the main or key points, conclusions or recommendations made by the author(s) in the reading you selected.
