HS3373: Child & Adolescent Health

Final Project

For the final project, you will write a paper focused on a specific child and adolescent health topic. I recommend choosing a topic covered in the course; however, you may choose to focus on a topic not covered in the course. This is a formal writing assignment. Your paper should be about 4-6 pages in length, not including your title page and references section. Margins should be 1in, font TNR size 11 or 12. Include headings (and subheadings if needed) in your paper to help keep it organized and easy to read. You will need to cite at least five academic resources in addition to your textbook. You are expected to follow APA 7th edition format.

Your work should address the following:

  1. Identify and discuss the major indicators of child and adolescent health status. Include a brief discussion on the social determinants of health and how they affect health and wellbeing among children and adolescents.

  2. Choose a specific child and adolescent health topic. You may choose a issue/condition/risk factor/behavior related to child and adolescent health. Explain your topic – what is it, what causes it (if a condition/disease), why is it important, how it affects children and adolescents.

    1. Consider social and environmental determinants of the condition or behavior (including family/community/cultural determinants), income/race/ethnic/gender inequalities that exist for the condition or behavior, and relevant developmental aspects (maternal, prenatal, infant, childhood).

    2. Include national, state, and local data about your topic. Make sure to highlight any disparities (where are there higher/lower rates? What populations have higher/lower rates?). For example, for someone who is focusing on on unplanned teenage pregnancies, they will need to include teen pregnancy rate in the US, in Texas, and Dallas County.

  3. Find at least two different interventions/programs that have been found to reduce the prevalence or progression of the condition (such as mental illness), or that have been used to increase the prevalence/adoption of the health behavior (such as engaging in physical activity or safer sexual activity).

    1. Discuss the two interventions/programs briefly. Include name, where it has been implemented (e.g., city, state, etc), target population (ages, if certain gender or ethnic/racial group, etc), setting (e.g., school, community, etc), key strategies used, and evidence that it has been effective.

  4. What gaps in knowledge do you believe still exist on what works for this child health issue/condition/behavior?

    1. What strategy would you propose as an intervention or program to address this child and adolescent health issue/condition/behavior? Include the setting where it would be implemented and list the people and/or systems ((parents, caregivers, health care providers and health delivery systems, educational systems, legal system, federal or state child health insurance systems, state or local health departments and programs) that would need to be involved.

    2. Explain why you think this strategy would be effective and realistic.
