Intro. Environmental Engineering

Lab # 2

Objectives:

  1. Understand the use of Water Quality Parameters and comparison to Standards and Guidelines

  2. Identify the impact of EPA regulations for a public water source

  3. Describe the importance of pH control in water supplies for

Purpose:

The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to instill within the students the importance of using the water quality standards and guidelines for providing healthy water for communities. They will also learn the importance of controlling alkalinity/pH in the delivery of water.

Procedure:

  1. (GROUP)Experiments with the acid/alkalinity content of water

  2. (Individual)Using the internet select a municipal water utilities (do not use Tyler, Tx) and fine the following:

    1. There source water (reservoir)

    2. The total flow capacity

    3. Average DAILY demand

    4. Obtain a copy of their latest SDWA report to customers

    5. If available an analysis of their source water or assumptions of water chemistry based on some assumptions you have from your own water analysis report

Deliverables: (GROUP)

  1. A combined group lab writ-up containing the procedures, materials/methods, data/ results and analysis of the pH and buffering capacity experiments performed in lab session.

  2. Submitted as a single lab report for the group and including the statement of participation.

(Individual)

  1. Write up the information about the water source from the listing above and specifics about the water system you found and whether their compliance with the SDWA is acceptable.

  2. The State of Texas identifies water systems as “Approved”, what does “approved”, “acceptable” or any other State determination mean for the water utility.
