Problem Set #3
  1. Identify the dataset you have chosen (highlight or use the checkbox):
    LAPD Arrest Reasons 2022

Gun Violence Archive 2022
Pathways to Desistance Study

  1. What is your research question?

  1. What statistical test will you use to analyze this research question?1 Highlight selection.

T Test

Chi Square

ANOVA

  1. Open the dataset in SPSS and go to the “Variable View” tab. Tell me about your selected independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV) by completing the table below. For each of these variables, copy the text you see in SPSS in these columns (Name, Label, and Measure) and paste/type the text onto this table. In other words, what you see on SPSS in these columns should match the table below.

  1. What is the null hypothesis and alternate hypothesis associated with your research question? Write the hypotheses in symbolic and statement form (if applicable). Here are symbols for you to copy and paste: μ , ≠, =.

  1. We will create two separate charts of the independent and dependent variable. On SPSS, go to Graphs Chart Builder. You will need to repeat this step twice for each variable. For a categorical variable, you will use a bar chart. For a scale variable, use the line chart. See the reference document called “Producing Charts in SPSS” for more information. Paste the two images of your charts below this document.

1 At this point, run the statistical test in SPSS. This will give you an initial check to see if you have correctly matched the right variables with an appropriate test. Do this before you complete the rest of the document. Note that if you choose the chi square test, you must have your assumptions met. If your assumptions are not met, you must reconsider your research question.
