Literacy Learning Lesson Segment Overview for Text Set

Mentor texts are written pieces that serve as an example of good writing for student writers. The texts are read for the purpose of studying the author’s craft, or the way the author uses words and structures the writing. The goal is to provide students a model they could emulate in crafting their own piece.

These texts are often read aloud to students in a whole group. Teachers are able to “think aloud” or verbalize what they are contemplating as they discuss elements of the text. This serves as a great model for students when they are attempting to write their own works. You have already created a thematic Text Set and considered how you will use these texts in literacy instruction. The next step is to complete an Elementary Literacy Learning Segment Overview to explain specific information for using the 5 texts in a unit of literacy instruction.

Remember:

  • Explicitly all five books somewhere in this learning segment.

  • Connect some part of each book to a SPECIFIC ELAR learning standard (TEKS).

  • The lessons must be cohesive and connect over the week - each lesson builds on the last lesson and supports the central focus.

  • The central focus ties everything together with what you want students to know and do by the end of the learning segment.

You will complete the attached template below:

State-Adopted Content Standards

List the TEKS you will teach over the 5 days. Be sure to have ELAR TEKS, and you may include content area TEKS as well.
