Chapter 12 Speech Design
Chapter Objectives
After studying this chapter, you should be able to:
analyze audience and context,
gather research for your speeches,
organize the body of a speech and incorporate effective transitions,
develop effective introductions and conclusions, and
understand the role and value of language.
Analyzing the Audience
Becoming an audience-centered speaker includes proactive behaviors and
responding to audience feedback.
Audience analysis includes asking demographic and relational questions about
who your audience is.
Analyzing the Context
Researching
Research should come from internal as well as external sources outside of the
company.
Using personal in addition to well-placed, relevant statistics will help
persuade your audience.
Organizing Your Presentation
Organizing the Body
Monroe’s Motivated Sequence is one way to organize your presentation
into five steps: attention, need, satisfaction, visualization, and action.
Classification, chronological, spatial, cause-effect, and problem-solution
are other organizational patterns for presentations to choose from.
Developing Transitions
Internal summaries of the main point you just made, followed by an
internal preview of the next main point are useful transitions to help your audience remember your message.
Signposts, such as first, second, and third, are used to help the audience
know where you are in the presentation.
Introductions should always begin with gaining the audience’s attention, followed by a
preview of the main points.
Conclusions should start by verbalizing that you are ending the presentation and leaving a
strong impression.
Language
Speakers should avoid the use of curse words, slang, texting language, and
colloquialisms while presenting.
Speakers who use metaphors to produce imagery and use repetition to produce
anticipation are helping to reinforce their messages.
