Case Study

Investments Canada (IC) provides investment and wealth management services across eastern Canada. It specializes in personal financial advising and works with clients in saving and budgeting as well as tax, retirement, and estate planning.

IC is expanding to western Canada, with plans to open new offices in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver within the next six months. They need to fill up to 15 vacancies for the Financial Advisor position. Important duties for a financial advisor include the following (Indeed.com, 2022):

  • Engaging with new and existing clients on a daily basis to better understand their short- and long-term financial goals

  • Monitoring client portfolios to ensure these meet their progress and target requirements

  • Providing tax, income, and estate guidance for clients while being able to answer questions

  • Regularly attending training sessions to stay up-to-date with regulatory or industry changes

  • Assisting with marketing and communications to help grow their customer base

  • Proactively resolving or preventing banking or portfolio problems

  • Educating clients to ensure they understand how their money is being managed

Questions (40 marks total)
  1. Suppose you are designing an applicant screening process for this company. Identify the three things you would be most inclined to screen for and. For each of these three things, how would you do the screening? Include a rationale for each component of your response. (10 marks)

  2. Design an assessment centre (AC) that could be used to select the Financial Advisors. What procedures would you include in the AC? Provide a rationale and explain your reasoning. (10 marks)

3. Based on this case study, identify the core competencies or behaviours that are important to job performance for a Financial Advisor within this company. Using these competencies, develop a standardized list of interview questions (i.e., for a structured interview) and a scoring guide with benchmark or sample answers. (20 marks)
