STUDIES FLUVIAL GEOMORPHOLOGY RESEARCH TOPIC PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT Due date for progress report : No later than Feb. 14 Value: 2% of the overall course grade Oral presentation date: Feb. 29 (in lab period) Value: 1 3% of the overall course grade Objective The objective of this assignment is conduct and present research on a fluvial geomorphology topic. Selection of Topic A list of suggested topics (slanted towards applied aspects of fluvial geomorphology and hydrology) that are available to select from is shown on the next page. Topics will be available for selection on a first -come, first -served basis (one person per topic). Contact me with your preferred selection. I suggest doing some preliminary research into a topic before you confirm your choice. Research Activity Once you have selected a topic, conduct research for information to include in an oral presentation. The topics are designed to be ones that are likely to have examples of recent or prominent events of public interest or impact in addition to being the subject of scientific research . Therefore, in addition to higher quality academic sources (such as scientific journals and books), you may include information about examples or case studies from sources such as news sites on the Internet. Ultimately , however, your sources should include some higher quality sources and not consist solely of results acquired from general Internet (e.g., Google) searches. Progress Report No later than Feb. 14 , at a mutually convenient time, you must meet with the instructor individually and present a report on your progress for the oral presentation. The purpose of the meeting is: • To s how clear evidence of planning and preparation completed for your presentation . • To d escribe the overall framework for your presentation. • To su mmarize information that you have gathered to date . A letter grade marking scheme will be applied based on an overall evaluation of the information provided in the progress report meeting. Oral Presentation Use the information from your research to c reate an oral presentation on your topic, approximately 1 2 minutes in length , using PowerPoint. The presentation must include properly -formatted citations in the author -date format (described in the Style Guide ) during the presentation, and a list of properly -formatted references (based on the Style Guide ) at the end of the presentation . 2 Assessment of Oral Presentation A letter grade marking scheme will be applied based on an overall evaluation of the oral presentation : • Quality of research information underpinning the oral presentation . • Formatting of list of references according to the Style Guide . • Visual q uality of PowerPoint presentation . • Quality of oral presentation . Restriction on Use of Free Pass for Assignment Deadline Extension The progress report meeting must be held no later than Feb. 14 . The free pass may not be used for the progress report meeting. All students will deliver their oral presentations in the same lab period on Feb. 29 , so the free pass may not be used for the oral presentation. Submission Procedure s Progress report I encourage you to bring notes to the progress report meeting, but no document submission is required.
