3 ACT STORY STRUCTURE The basics of storytelling: A Beginning, Middle, and an End; a guide used to write and evaluate stories. There are MANY versions of the 3 Act Structure – most of them have the same basic foundational elements; find what works best for you! According to some, EACH ACT is separated by TWO PLOT POINTS, and each act serves a specific function: ACT I – The Set Up - the first 25/30 minutes ; needs a strong opener - in the first 15 minutes you set up the tone, main character(s), and the world they live in - halfway through ACT 1 , we should see The CATALYST (Inciting Incident, Call to Adventure , a P roblem to S olve ); usually happens in the first 10 - 15 minutes and shakes up the world (the status quo) - for the remainder of ACT 1 , the main character refuses the call to adventure, avoids the problem, or prepares to take action - PLOT POINT #1 happens at the end of ACT 1, around the 25 - 30 min mark (also called the ACT 1 Climax, 1 st Act Break, Lock In); big, distinct, memorable, and propels us into ACT 2 - at this moment or as a result of this moment, our main character resolves to take on this problem ACT 2 – The Confrontation - where the R ising A ction starts 24 - 31 minutes in and ends 70 - 90 minutes into the movie, depending on the movie length - the longest act of the movie - usually broken down into 2 parts: - A CT 2 P ART 1 – Fun & Games (rising to a victory) - tension and conflict aren’t high; new characters or subplots revealed; where relationships develop in love stories ; montages are found here; heroes learn new skills and abilities - Halfway through ACT 2 is another turning point: the MIDPOINT ( M idpoint C limax, M idpoint R eversal) - occurs at 45 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on if it’s a 90 minute or 2 - hour movie, respectively - at the Midpoint there is a major shi ft in the dynamic of the story: the main character has a major success, a devastating failure, or a powerful revelation, etc - not every story has or needs a Midpoint climax - ACT 2 PART 2 – Things Get Serious (falling to a defeat) - this is where the negative influences (the bad guys) rally from defeat and build back up, and the hero experiences extreme internal and external conflicts - everything happening in A CT 2 P ART 2 is building to PLOT POINT #2 (called the False Defeat; the Death of Obi - Wan) ; the ‘ALL IS LOST’ moment, near the end of ACT 2 around the 75 minute mark; the opposite of the Midpoint - the ‘DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL’ happens around the 75 - 85 minute mark: when the main character or protagonist feels at their lowest - All is Lost: Physical; Dark Night of the Soul: Mental (emotional) - where the MAIN PLOT and the SUB PLOT merge - where the protagonist receives a pep talk to build them up as they enter ACT 3 - end of ACT 2: PLOT POINT #2 (Act 2 Climax, Act 2 Turning Point, Act 2 Reversal , Act 2 Break); turning point that sends the plot into a new direction and our characters into ACT3; happens at the 80 - minute mark in a 95 minute movie; 90 minute mark in a 120 minute movie - the ‘ A H - HA ’ moment: when the protagonist comes up with a plan ACT III – the Climax - shortest act, 15 - 30 minutes - much at stake; conflict and stakes at the highest - there can often be a TWIST in the middle of ACT 3: a revelation, a false death, etc - the whole movie has been leading up to the ACT 3 CLIMAX, which happens between minutes 85 - 110; tensions and conflict are at their highest: big fight, car chase, when true love is declared - following the Climax is the RESOLUTION; can be joyful and happy, or tragic; answers final questions and wraps up loose ends
