SPM 2000 - Assignment #1 (Midterm) : Marketing & Sponsorship Plan Must be submitted in the Canvas Dropbox. Only the following file extension types are acceptable for submission: .pdf, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx Assignments should be in 12 - point standard font (e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, Cambria) with no more tha n 1 - inch margins. This is not a formal paper so it can be either single or double - spaced. Assignment Objective/Overview: Q: Why are we doing this assignment? A: As stated in the text and heard many times throughout my own career in sport management, it’s true that “everyone sells” to some degree, regardless of what job you obtain in the sport industry. It’s important that all employees have some kind of background knowledge in sport marketing and sales /sponsorship . Securing suitable corporate sponsors are a major source of revenue and advertising that are mutually beneficial to both the sport organization and sponsor. Sponsorship is “the acquisition of rights to affiliate or directly associate with a product or event for the purpose of deriving benefits related to that affiliation” (Mullin, Hardy, & Sutton, 200 7 ). Students will use information based out of the course textbook , Principles and Practice of Sport Management ( 6 th ed.) and other relevant outside resources to produce a basic marketing & sponsorship plan for a company sponsor of his/her choosing. We are not goi ng to create an entire marketing plan . * The marketing/sponsorship plan should be no more than 2 - 3 pages in length. It can be presented and submitted in a combination of paragraph/outline format using the assignment outline. * Part I : Your marketing & sponsorship plan will be based on one of the following scenarios of your choosing . Let’s assume the facilities are built and ready to go in each example. Please choose one of the following: 1.) A new professional sport team has moved to the local area: either Bradenton, Sarasota, or Venice/North P ort. For this example, we’ll assume that the area is fictiti ously large enough to support a major professional sports team and has an appropriate arena or stadium already built . You can choose from the following major sports: football, baseball, basketball, hockey, or soccer. 2.) A professional golf or tennis tournam ent is being played at one of our local venues. For this example, we’ ll assume that for golf it’s either a Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) or Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) event . For tennis, it can either be an Association of Tennis P rofessionals (ATP) or Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event. You can do th e research and pick which venue in the area that would be most appropriate for hosting a large - scale tournament event in either sport or you can make up a venue . Several local golf courses and tennis facilities have hosted these kinds of events. 3.) A large - scale Olympic sporting event such as a World Championships is coming to the area . You can choose between men’s or women’s and also choose the sport (obviously not a winter sport in Florida such as skiing ). This can be anything ranging from swim ming, beach volleyball, marathon, equestrian, etc. Remember that the World Rowing Championships are being held here locally at Nathan Bend erson Park. You can use their sponsorship and vendor list as a guideline to get some ideas. 4.) The Action Sports Tour, Summer X Games, or some other extreme action sports event is coming to our local area. You choose the venue or venues (you can even assume that a venue is built) that will host the event. Be sure to specify which action sports tour or event you choose. Part I I : You are an employee of the sport organization and/or venue that is hosting the event . Your job is to sign on one major sponsorship from a local or national organization in order to generate a mutually beneficial partnership for your organization and the prospective sponsor. * Note: y ou must choose a specific o rganization to partner with (e . g. Sarasota Memorial Hosp ital, Home Depot, Microsoft, Chevrolet, Verizon Wireless, Activia , etc.). Here are some possible industries you can choose from (not an all - inclusive list) : Healthcare (e.g. hospitals, doctors, dentists, orthopedic surgeons, prescription drugs, etc.) Re staurants Food or Drink Brands Logistics (e.g. UPS) E - Commerce (e.g. Amazon) Technology Automotive Retail or Specific Brands (e.g. clothing, home improvement, electronics, sporting goods, home furnishings, kid toys, etc.) Education Hygiene Products Busin esses such as investment firms, insurance, consulting services, etc. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) or Construction Media Companies (e.g. radio, TV) How you will be Graded (100 points total): * The marketing/sponsorship plan should be no more than 2 - 3 pages in length. It can be presented and submitted in a combination of paragraph/outline format (NOT written like a paper or formal essay) using the assignment outline. * I. Background of your Sport Team or Event (30 points) a. Scenario you chose from Part I of this assignment: i. Sport team or event you chose from Part I . What is the name of your team or event? ii. Where is the team or event located in this area? (i.e. Bra denton, Sarasota, Venice, North P ort) iii. Why is this team or event a good fit for this local community? iv. Based on the sport or event you chose, who are some of the target markets t hat will associate with this sport or event and why ? For example, target market for a PGA Tour eve nt would vary greatly from those in Action Sports. Think about the market demographics in this area as well. II. Company Sponsor (30 points) a. Prospective Company Sponsor : i. Name of company who you will pursue to secure a major sponsorship for your team or event ii. Brief overview of the company to p ursue as a potential sponsor for your team or event : d escribe the industry associated with this company and give a brief overview (e.g. construction, education, financial planning, engineering, information technology , electronics, retail, healthcare) . iii. Company’s mission or goals. For example, who are their customers or target markets ? Who is the audi ence and ideal customer that they are trying to reach? III. Sponsorship Proposal and Marketing Mix (40 points) a. Sponsorship Package i. Choose 5 benefits for a sponsorship package using your sport organization’s inventory that you think would be beneficial for this company sponsor (think of marketing mix on pg s. 52 - 57 and the 4 P’s). One of the benefits MUST include some form of ticketing whether it be season tickets, group outings, luxury suites, VIP tents, etc. Remember that ticket sales are the lifeblood of a sport organization! Include rationale for each benefit as to why you th ink each respective part would be beneficial for the sponsor . You may use more than one benefit in a single category and it will count as two (ex. tickets could include both a certain number season tickets and a group night or two ). Be creative! Some e xamples: 1. S ignage - outfield, dasher board, concourse , court, dugout, benches, etc. 2. T ickets – individual season tickets, group tickets, luxury suite or V IP tent . Tickets could be used for employees, company clients, etc. 3. N aming rights – event, stadium, are na 4. Advertising/ Media inventory – radio, television, media guides internet, social media 5. In - Venue Promotions – theme nights (e.g. fireworks sponsored by Publix ) , giveaway items such as bobbleheads, t - shirts, coupon or voucher s Lastly, I am here to help!
