Discussion week 3.- attached

Discussion week 3

This week in lecture you explored the value of professional and personal references in the job application process. You not only learned about the steps to follow when asking someone for a reference, you also examined how to serve as a reference for someone else.

For discussion this week, put yourself in the shoes of someone who is being asked to serve as a professional reference.  Imagine that you have known one of your coworkers, Larry Smith, for 12 months, when he approaches you and asks you to serve as a reference for him.  As you are making your decision, he provides you with his resume, linked below, and tells you he has applied to a position similar to the one described in the occupational therapist job description weblinked below.

Using what you have learned in lecture this week, please address the following in your initial post:

  • Pretend you have decided that you cannot provide a strong reference for Larry.  Outline what you would say to him when you decline.

  • Now imagine instead that you have decided that you will serve as one of Larry’s references.

    • List and explain the skills that you would try to focus on when contacted by Larry’s prospective employer(s).  Justify why these skills would be important to mention and detail how you could use information from Larry’s resume to support your comments to his potential employer.
