I went to the 7 p.m. show. The production was located at the Warner Theatre at 13th & E Streets in Washington, D.C. I was invited to attend by my good friend Judy Nguyen. We sat in the center of the theatre in the tenth row from the stage. It was a perfect seat. We were surrounded by many couples and families who were also enjoying the event. When I first walked into the theatre, I was impressed with the venue. The space was very nicely appointed with lots of red velvet looking finishes and gold accents. It seemed very luxurious and rich. The hosts were extremely friendly and looked like they enjoyed their jobs. 2. Provide specific information and a description of at least two pieces (e.g. art, exhibits, music, etc.). Although I do not know all the names of the musical pieces of The Nutcracker, I do know that the music was written by Pyotr Hyick Tchaikovsky. As a former ballerina, I have always enjoyed Tchaikovsky’s pieces, particularly those of The Nutcracker, more than any other classical music that I have heard. His music sets the stage for the type of excitement in dances that you are about to see.My favorite dance was in Act II: Springtime Under the Cherry Blossoms. The dance was of the Anacostia Indians. (I really liked the Americana influences in the script – the opening scene was set in a mansion in Georgetown and the Nutcracker was decked out in patriotic dress). This dance of the Indians was a beautiful pas de deux with a bit of a modern, lyrical dance. Unlike the traditional pas de deux with tutus and structured lifts, the dancers were scantily dressed and you could actually see their muscles working while they slinked around each other in very tasteful combinations. The dancers were remarkable.My next favorite piece was also in Act II. The Sugar Plum Fairy was an incredibly beautiful dancer. She was a very tiny young woman who made the movements seem effortless. You felt as if you could pick her up and float her like a feather. She worked around various young children who were costumed as butterflies, mushrooms, blossoms, and bees. She maneuvered so effortlessly through the many flailing arms that I was amazed at her grace. 3. Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event. The Nutcracker as performed by the Washington Ballet was quite entertaining. I loved the fact that they kept the performance under two hours which included an intermission. Even though I took dance for over twelve years, watching ballet can be a little bit of a snoozer. The choreographer, Septime Webre, did a fantastic job with the various pieces and I felt he utilized the stage and dancers quite well. The costumes were fabulous and as I mentioned had a patriotic theme which gave it a bit of a twist. The stage sets and lighting were done quite well too. There was an abundance of scenery changes and I loved seeing the snow fall from the sky. (I prefer theatre snow to real snow). I have seen The Nutcracker before but it was performed by the Boston Ballet at the Wang Theatre in Boston, MA. In comparison, I feel that the Boston Ballet’s version was much more exciting as there was a live orchestra, although it was a long production and much more formal than the Washington Ballet’s version. I truly enjoyed the performance and it makes me want to go back to the theatre soon. I live right across the river from the Kennedy Center and can see it from my living room. I have no excuse.
