Gun Violence

Gun violence is a serious issue in the nation, and that's why I believe it should be addressed with a balanced approach that doesn't disregard the Second Amendment but keeps public safety on top. Strengthening background checks is one critical step. All gun sales should be mandated with universal background checks, including private transactions and gun shows, in order to avoid firearms being acquired by those who shouldn't have them (Kivisto & Pahlen, 2018). It doesn't violate the rights of law-abiding citizens, but it's responsible ownership. Furthermore, safe storage laws must be enforced to avoid unauthorized access, especially by children or individuals at risk of self or other harm (Parikh et al., 2017). Furthermore, safe gun ownership can be promoted through mandatory safety training so that gun owners are aware of proper handling, storage and legal obligations. Due process is given to exterminate Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) to remove individuals deemed dangerous firearms temporarily. In addition, increasing investment in community-based violence prevention programs and innovative gun technology can dramatically reduce gun-related incidents as well as the enforcement of existing laws. With this, we can take steps to lower gun violence while honoring the rights of law-abiding firearm owners.
