Information system principle: WhatsApp
WhatsApp is the most used messaging application in the world ,it enable user to to send text messages ,make voice and video call ,share photos and videos .the paper were working on today objective is to explore the database ,software and hardware that WhatsApp use and how people are using it plus the concerns with privacy and security of the app .
Hardware:
1-user -side hardware:
-smartphone, tablet and computer: WhatsApp operate on smartphone as a primary hardware, it did expand on table and computer.
-microphone and camera: this hardware is used by WhatsApp to send voice notes, photos and videos
-internet connection: WhatsApp rely on the internet to function and operate, especially using wifi router and cellular connection.
2-sever hardware:
Data center: for WhatsApp to function properly it rely on servers that store and processes data
Networking equipment: is order for date to transmit properly WhatsApp uses routers, switches and load balancers
Software side involved to operate WhatsApp:
1-the actual mobile app: WhatsApp is available on iOS, android, Mac OS and Windows, these apps provide the user interface for users to send and receive messages, send photos, videos and even make calls.
Operating Systems: WhatsApp rely on operation systems like iOS, android, windows and Mac OS to function, this software is the key connection between the software and hardware necessary for WhatsApp app to work.
Backend Software:
1-whatsapp backend is written in Erlang, a real time software used to manage billions of users efficiently
XMPP Protocol: WhatsApp use (xmpp) for real time communication, it's one of the most important elements of WhatsApp messaging system
Encryption Software: WhatsApp claim to use end -to-end encryption mean only the users end can read the messages
Database Management Systems:whatsappp use SQLite, a software that allow users to store chat history, photos, videos and settings
Database Involved in WhatsApp:
SQLite: WhatsApp use SQLite to store media, chat, and setting on user device
Server-Side Databases: WhatsApp servers use database to save information such, user phone number, profile picture and connection logs but the actual content are not saved in the server database because of end-to end encryption
How user interact with WhatsApp:
registration: users need to user their phone number, verify it using SMS or phone call, this ensure that the account is tied to the unique user only
Messaging: user can send text messages, images, video, voice notes and document also the app support group chat allowing multiple people to communicate at the same time
Voice and video calls :whatsapp allows voice and video calls these feature uses hardware such camera, microphone and internet connection
Status update: WhatsApp allows user to share status updates that last for 24 hours
Settings and customization: WhatsApp allows user to customized profile, themes, privacy, and notification
Privacy and security in WhatsApp:
1-end-to –end encryption: WhatsApp allow this as a privacy superpower where the sender and receive can only see the messages even WhatsApp itself can access the users chat or media
2-Privacy concern:
Metadata collection: WhatsApp collect users phone number, device information, and usage patterns. This data can be used by WhatsApp for advertising.
3-secutrity risk:
Scams: WhatsApp user may fall for scams that come from special link and messages
Device vulnerability: WhatsApp user could face chat and media leaks if the device is compromised.
4-managerial concerns:
Whatsapp must ensute the safety and security of the platform from cyberattacks.
Also, WhatsApp platform must comply with data protection regulation such (GDPR) in the European union.
Conclusion:
WhatsApp is the most advance messaging on the planet that rely on hardware and software to operate properly and databases to deliver messages in real time. While its end-to-end encryption provide a very strong security for messaging content, user and managers should remain alert about privacy and security concern .as technology still evolve WhatsApp will continue to face challenges and risk when it comes to security and trust
