Research Proposal
Prof. Weber
Proposed Thesis Statement:
Analyzing topics and issues in the novel Fahrenheit 451 proves the relevance of the text to twenty-first century readers and provides lessons modern society can learn to avoid the fate of citizens in the novel.
Topic Overview:
In this essay I am planning to write about various ways that our modern society connects to scenes and topics in Bradbury’s fictional novel. My goal is to include several different issues that are currently impacting our lives in 2025 and I will show how these issues are reflected in the novel, with the goal of proving to a skeptical reader that the book remains relevant to modern readers. Another part of this essay is to incorporate research sources into the essay to further support my argument.
Research Questions:
1. Is censorship in the novel exactly the same as what we are seeing in our modern societies?
2. How are the technologies today similar or different than those in Bradbury’s book?
3. To what degree does the use of drugs impact the human mind?
4. What does Bradbury say about the importance of connecting with nature and are we seeing a disconnect between people and nature today?
5.
Methodology:
Some of the sources I will include in this project include news or current events articles to help me make a connection between the fictional society and our world today as well as some scholarly sources for the last two body paragraphs. The current events or news articles will be recent enough to help the reader see that the issues/topics are timely and relevant. The scholarly sources will give my essay more academic or professional credibility. I will not be including any sources that cannot be verified as credible and I do not plan on including any personal interviews or podcasts. My sources will be checked to make sure each author has some type of professional or academic credentials.
