Violent vs. Nonviolent Solutions
Violent solutions are often temporary because they depend mainly on power which does not address the root causes of conflicts or the deeper issues that fuel them. Napoleon famously said that everything taken by force is temporary highlighting the fragility of victories achieved through violence and the inevitable resistance they create Conversely nonviolent solutions tend to be more permanent because they involve changes in social development human reconciliation and transformation of underlying conditions (Folger Poole and Stutman 2017)
When applying this idea to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia we gain considerable insight into why military action alone cannot solve such a complex crisis. Kuzio (2017) explains that the Ukraine Russia conflict is deeply rooted in a long and complicated history full of political cultural and social tensions that cannot be erased by force alone Military action can lead to temporary territorial control but it is unable to resolve these deep divisions or heal the wounds caused by decades of mistrust Wilson (2020) emphasizes that combining nonviolent resistance with diplomatic engagement encourages dialogue and rebuilds trust among the parties involved providing a more durable and sustainable path to peace Furthermore Hodges (2019) stresses the importance of reconciliation and social healing in the post conflict environment warning that continued violence only perpetuates cycles of retaliation instability and suffering for civilians
Therefore, and in line with Napoleons idea the long-term resolution of the conflict must lie in nonviolent approaches that address historical grievances promote genuine dialogue and focus on rebuilding society and institutions While violent means may dominate the short term only through consistent and continuous nonviolent efforts such as negotiation diplomacy and social reconstruction can lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia be truly achieved.
