For this submission (Part 1), you will be submitting your career research notes.
These should be notes you have taken using one of the required formats (Cornell, list, concept map, or outline) listed in the project guidelines. Your notes should include summarized and paraphrased information about your Career Explorer results as well as your research from the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Part 1: Assessment, Research, and Notes
Career assessments are widely used by career counselors to help students identify possible career choices that are well-matched to individual strengths and interests. You will be using a free online tool to start this project.
CAREER ASSESSMENT:
If you have already completed the assessment, retrieve your results by logging in to your account.
If you have not completed it, go to the following website: Career Explorer Assessment ToolLinks to an external site.
You will need to create an account.
Note: The instructor has NO access to your account and cannot reset accounts or passwords. You may use your cougarmail or personal email account, whichever you prefer, just be sure you write down the login information so you don't get locked out of the website if you wish to go back for any reason.
Take the assessment (approximately 30 minutes).
After completing the assessment, you will receive personalized results. You will review and take notes over the information presented on the results page and in the linked traits and personality reports.
CAREER ASSESSMENT NOTE-TAKING:
Read the information about your results, including suggested careers as well as the personality information and trait results, included on the results page and in the linked reports.
Take a set of notes over your results using one of the required formats (Cornell, list, concept map, or outline). Summarize and paraphrase the information as much as possible.
Identify the note-taking style used at the top of the page.
CAREER RESEARCH:
Go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook website. For your convenience, a link has been provided here: Occupational Outlook HandbookLinks to an external site.
Enter your career choice in the search box (top right of page). Use either the career you wish to pursue (if you already know) or use one of the matches you received from the career assessment.
Your search results may produce several related careers. For example, if you type "nursing" in the search box, you will see a variety of specialty areas and related health careers. Select one that you would be most likely to pursue. The more detailed you are with your search, the more detailed and relevant information you will receive.
CAREER RESEARCH NOTE-TAKING:
Read the information about your career.
Take a second set of notes over your career research using one of the required formats (Cornell, list, concept map, or outline). Summarize and paraphrase the information as much as possible.
You may add these notes to your career assessment notes (be sure they are separated with a title or another way I can easily distinguish the two sets) or you may start a different set of notes using a different note-taking format.
Identify the note-taking style used at the top of the page.
Tip: When you look up your career on The Occupational Outlook Handbook website, you will notice tabs along the top of the page (e.g. "What They Do, Work Environment, etc."). Use each of these tabs to help you identify main ideas that should be included in your notes
Things to Remember:
You will be graded on both the content of your notes (did you include all the key ideas and major details?) and for correctly applying the format of the note-taking style you have chosen.
Note: if you do not clearly use one of the required note-taking styles, you will receive a 0 in this area of the rubric.
You will submit your notes (digital or handwritten) in the Career Project Part 1 - Research Notes Submission Area in Canvas.
The picture must be exceptionally clear when submitting a picture of handwritten notes. The assignment will not be accepted for course credit if the writing is not easily legible and the photo is clear.
Make sure your file submission has been uploaded correctly and is viewable for grading.
