Assignment – Political Terms, Meanings and Controversies

A major factor in current polarized American politics is lack of communication between people of differing viewpoints. This includes utilizing terms that sometimes the speaker does not even really understand.

For each term listed answer of the four prompts A-D below. That means ALL the terms listed.

  1. Provide a definition and explanation for each term. For anacronyms like DEI, ESG, CRT explain what each letter represents, as part of each definition.

  1. Explain the controversies, including both the pros and cons, regarding the arguments about each of those terms and the ideas they represent.

  1. Explain how Congress has proposed or passed any legislation that addressed the ideas represented by each of those terms. For example, the law eliminating DEI on college campuses (name of law?).

  1. Considering your findings, explain your position on each term. Based on what you have learned, what does the term mean to you? Is that different than what you originally thought? If so, how?

You MUST USE THREE SOURCES FOR EACH TERM: one liberal, one conservative, one nonprofit, nonpartisan fact-checking site. For example, the New York Times would count as left leaning; The New York Post would count as right leaning; and politifact.com. factcheck.org or snopes.com would count as fact-checking sources. However, you may use any other sources you prefer in those categories.

You MUST cite your sources within the body of the assignment wherever you refer to ANY information from a source.

You MUST also provide a Works Cited section at the end of your paper, including all sources you have referenced.

DO NOT WRITE AN ESSAY. Answer each of the FOUR QUESTIONS/ANALYSIS above for each term then move on to the next term.
