SPEECH 1500 : Public Speaking Speech Days : Thursday, 2/5; Tuesday, 2/10; and Thursday, 2/12 Introduct ory Speech Details Time Limit: 3-4 minutes Note Cards: Notecards Required Full -sentence outline: • All students: Upload into the Introductory Speech folder in iCollege on or before 11:00 am, Thursday, 2/5 (day one of in -class speeches). This needs to be either a Word doc or PDF file . This is so I can do an ‘originality’ check for plagiarism. • On your speech day: bring your full -sentence outline with you to give t o me, so I can look it over as you give your speech on your speaking day Guidelines: • This speech is about you. It will ease you in to public speaking with a topic that you know quite well already. • This speech is formatted as a full -sentence (not keyword) outline . Turn this in to me on your speaking day. • You will be required to do the following: 1. Discuss three aspects of/about your life . Something about your history, accomplishments, interests, influences, inspirations, or goals. 2. Your delivery must be extemporaneou s (well -rehearsed, but don’t read your speech to us). This means you will have practiced at least 3 times and use your notecards as support BUT DO NOT read directly from them. 3. Note: you don’t need to cite sources for this one (unless you want to). Also , NO slideshow presentations for this speech (the boot -up/cueing process is too time consuming, and I want you to zero in on the mechanics of speechwriting/presenting). REQUIRED FORMAT FOR ALL SPEECHES Introduction: • Gain attention and interest • Reveal the topic (“Today I’ll be telling you about…”) • Credibility statement : why you (speaker) are an authority on your subject (in this case, you!) • Preview your main ideas (very broadly/succinctly – just 1 -3 words for each main idea) Body: • Use transitions throughout speech to connect paragraphs and ideas (e.g. First, Second, Third ) Conclusion: • Signal the end is coming (In closing, to conclude, etc.) • Summarize your main ideas ( restate your preview , from the intro ) • Make a final appeal to the audience: relevant quote, interesting closing line, etc. End strong!
