Paragraph 1

One element of Sula that I find really interesting is the character development between Sula and Nel. As I read the beginning chapters, I started noticing how different their families and childhoods are even though they live in the same town. Nel grows up in a more strict household with rules, while Sula grows up in a family that is more free and unpredictable. Because of this, their friendship feels strong since they each bring something different into the relationship. I also think the setting of the Bottom is important because the community is very involved in everyone’s lives and people are always talking about each other. The way the town views people seems to affect how characters are treated and judged. This makes the setting interesting to me because it almost feels like the community itself plays a role in shaping the story.

Paragraph 2

Out of the three sources, the one that helped me the most was Jacqueline Woodson’s TED Talk about reading slowly. One idea that stood out to me was that reading slowly helps you really understand the meaning behind a story instead of just rushing through it. When I first started reading Sula, I realized that Toni Morrison’s writing has a lot of detail and meaning that you can easily miss if you read too fast. The idea of “deep reading” helped me focus more on the language and the small details in the story. Janet Gardner’s Writing About Literature was also helpful because it explains that readers should pay attention to things like imagery and character relationships. After reading these sources, I tried to slow down while reading Sula and think more about why Morrison describes certain scenes and characters the way she does.
