Topic Proposal and Bibliography
For the Capstone Ethical Issue Research Paper, I will be analyzing the ethical viewpoints of a Christian and utilitarianism with regards to physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. This paper will be a different topic from the previous paper -- transgender athletes in athletics -- since it will be an examination of end-of-life ethics. Anthropological value of human life is the ground of the Christian ethics, which considers human life as having a value of its own, since human beings are created in the image of God, so ending the innocent human life intentionally is morally wrong. Utilitarianism on the other hand, considers the outcome of euthanasia, which is the reduction of suffering and maximization of overall good. This paper will critically analyze each of these ethical systems with respect to the concepts of autonomy, suffering, compassion, and sanctity of life; and will identify the ethical system that is the most consistent in giving ethical guidance.
