Narrative AssignmentDue Friday, January 27th at 11:59pmSubmit via Google ClassroomFor the first project of your portfolio, you will complete a narrative essay—a personal story told from your point of view. The essay can be on any topic related to your life and experiences, as long as it has a purpose. It can be about something as life changing as a major milestone, or as small as a conversation with a stranger at the grocery store—as long as the event created a moment of revelation for you. While you could pick something big, like a death, consider instead reflecting on something small. Often it is otherwise minor-seeming things that impact us in the most—exclusion from something, alienation from something, or unexpected recognition of some kind, for example. Keep in mind that we will be sharing our work through peer review, so please write about something you feel comfortable showing others.While you will not be graded for the narrative until the end of the semester—and you will have plenty of time to revise it over the next few months—it is in your best interest to turn in a complete essay, done to the best of your ability. This will allow me to provide the most thorough and helpful feedback, enabling you to revise for the best possible grade. The essay should be:Double-spaced, with one-inch margins1,200 – 1,500 words in length (about five pages)In Times New Roman, Calibri, or Cambria fontSubmitted on time—even if you feel it needs more workTips!Rather than starting from an event you remember, sometimes it helps to work backward. Think of a way your perspective has shifted over the past few years, and follow that change back to its source.I am more interested in thoughtfulness than length—four concise and impactful pages will be better received than five rambling onesTake risks! You will have time to revise, and trying something new and failing is better than doing the same old thing. At its core, the narrative is creative writing. Have fun with it.Be honest. The best writing honors the truth—not what you want to be the truth. Things don’t always have to be pretty.Remember that the essay should have a point. Even if things aren’t cleanly resolved, the reader should understand why the essay has been written.
