Unit V Revision of Literature Review and Introduction (PHYLIS YOUNG ONLY)

Congratulations on finishing this portion of the paper.  The introduction should serve to not only let the reader know the topic and argument, but also to encourage the reader’s further exploration into the paper, while the Review of Literature should explore the ideas of the sources on both sides of the controversy.  This is important and it naturally leads into the upcoming body of the paper.

You provide an introduction that approximates is less than the 350 word requirement. The purpose is to introduce the topic and main ideas that will be covered so that the reader understands the main pro and con points about your topic. Also, it must be evident what the argument will be for the paper, and it must be strongly stated, along with the reasons and the best place is the end of the introduction. See the study guide and the comments on your paper as the introduction importantly impacts the reader’s ideas first.

The Review of Literature should highlight ideas from support information, with in text citation of sources. This is simply the portion of the paper where source ideas are reviewed and is not the portion of the paper for your ideas or conclusions; the important part is the pro and con portion and that is where you should focus what sources say on the controversy, with the use of in text citations of sources. Perhaps you would do better to add the debate source ideas to the pro and con sides and delete this portion. For the revision, focus on your thesis and the sources that comment on the belief that parental responsibility is a main reason for a child learning to succeed at life. Also, on the other hand what sources are in opposition to this argument? The conclusion to the review of literature contain a restatement of your thesis and the reasons, per the syllabus. It must be stated strongly and it is not about the information on parental responsibility; it is about the argumentative thesis and the pros and cons of sources. By constructing this portion of the paper in the style recommended in the study guide, it allows the reader to understand how each source contributes to the controversy and helps differentiate it from the body of the paper, where your ideas are stated.

The organization of the paper should allow the reader to follow the main points; however, more use of transition words/phrases would add clarity and unity.  When you transition between ideas, words and phrases such as, “therefore, also, again, besides, furthermore, finally, even so, in addition, equally important, etc.” These can be used to build unity among the ideas

The paper demonstrates proficient use of Standard Written English work.

The format of the paper contains a cover page and reference page. The in text citations and the references contain some errors Access the study guide and the syllabus for guidelines and consult The CSU Citation Guide and/or The Purdue Owl at  http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl.

Please check your paper for my comments ( I only make them on the first part of the paper, as usually the same errors are made throughout), the rubric and the point descriptions for more information as to the grading.  Be sure to use feedback as you work on the revision for Unit V. Also, email me if you have any questions and/or comments. I think you a good start for an effective argumentative paper, but it needs some work. Keep up the working and revising! CRC

Page 4 Comments: I am not sure that this or the following paragraph has much to do with the defense or opposition of the thesis; it is simply more information on the topic that is not important to the argument.

Page 5 Comments: The paper is concerned with the ideas of the sources, so nothing should be included, save the ideas of the sources. This part of the paper should be like a conversation the sources are having, with each stating their ideas.
