INTRODUCTION

This essay is meant to give a summary of the movie “Clueless” by explaining its production, historical, stylistic and cultural contexts. The clueless movie emerged at the time when the American culture was fixated on some issues like the O.J Simpsons ill-fitting gloves, and it became a hit at the box office. It raised the careers of the stars who were involved and had an influence on fashion for 20 years. This movie also developed to be a cultural touchstone for many generations. (Chaney, 2017).

This movie was produced on July 19th, 1995 and it grew to become the best movie in the country that day. It generated $10.6 million on the weekend of July 21-23, and this made it be branded as the most unexpected triumph in that summer season. The most important thing is that the movie touched the culture chord that seemed prime and ready to be struck. Teen and pre-teen girls rushed to the malls in search for knee-high socks and plaid skirts. Paramount collaborated with Heckerling whereby they came up with a TV adaptation. (Chaney, 2017).

  1. Jen Chaney is a critic of the pop culture as well as a writer who has contributed much to the numerous outlets which are inclusive of the Washington post, New York Magazine’s culture, and the Dissolve and Esquire.

This film utilizes subtexts to communicate with the audience subconsciously. All the actions on the screen are meant to talk to us and abruptly the language changes to the auditory and visual spectacle. It evokes some emotional manipulation. Dramatic ironies and satire are applied in the Film whereby Austen and Heckerling are portrayed as self-deluded and indulged manipulators. The voice over from Cher is very friendly whereby she commences the movie with a statement “but seriously, I have a way normal life for a teenage girl. I mean I get up, I brush my teeth, and I pick out my school clothes”. (“Cinematic Techniques in Clueless,” 2017).

  1. Nebolit is a kind of a boutique website that is conducted by Charles Klassen who is an experienced English teachers. He has trained in America and Canada while teaching in Canada and Australian private as well as public systems.

The use of irony and satire is in such a way that there is self-deprecation where Cher shows her shallow superficial yet she poses as an intellectual. This movie is a social experiment that is fascinating. The producers of this film made a deliberate move to set new trends for the teenagers. The release of this movie even inspired the establishment of the line of Barbie Dolls. (Fiction, 2017).

The plot of this movie remains attached to the novel, but there is a deceptive resemblance. There is a correlation in the stories, but there is a great difference in the audience. The audience perceives Emma as a thematic skeleton. The popularity of the Film engulfs it with authority. There is a shift in the cultural contexts and an emergence of the new impulses where the primary directives mutate. There are two techniques that Heckerling applies in the film that show an updated agenda. First, there are small inconsistencies in the story line that reflect how the 20th century updates the 18th century. (MAZMANIAN, 2017).

Hecklering also applies the technique of cliché’ and stereotype to pose a challenge the opinion of the audience. Although there are multiple adaptations of Emma in the movie, clueless serves as a beautiful model that is refurbished because there are no attempts in it where there is an imitation of the original text by period or setting. It is, therefore, tough to compare the 18th-century version of the cultural environment in which this movie was produced. (MAZMANIAN, 2017).

Mellissa was awarded the Billee Murray Denny Prize for poetry because of the poem that she wrote” The ones over forty.” This poem appeared in The Denny poems.Mellisa is an alumna of the Colorado College.

Therefore, the adaptations that attempt to align themselves with the original novel only end up disguising the updated agendas and perspectives behind the accents or costumes. This film does not experience this dilemma. The fetters of Clueless have to be feared which is in line with the myth of the human beings to have a great fear of the materials goods which make them become slaves. (Silvesta, 2017).
