REFECTION PAPER.

Write a summary of this interview ( single spaced 3 pages)

Ive met this wonderful Korean student 3 times to gather his experience to complete this project, please use all of the information I gathered below to complete this assignment.

Table 1

Since I know English, there will be more opportunity, very excited to come to USA.

Even though I know English, I was deaf for 3 month, because I didn’t have courage to speak it in high school, and people might not understand what im saying because the accent that I had.

There were 5 international students in my high school, and the Americans were staring at us and the international students were my only friends.

American culture basically has no difference with Korean culture, but Korean is more family oriented.

Korean English is all about grammar and vocabulary, you barely speak even though you know it, American English is more focusing on slangs, and communication.

If you don’t speak good English in high school, you will be a target to the bullies, and that caused me homesick and depression there were nothing I can do about it.

Host parents are very open to deal with you, Americans are willing to spent time with their child more, in korea, we don’t have that.

Table II

Anyone who is in the family, who shared blood is considered to belong in the family

Family members should respect each other and don’t treat each other poorly. All the family members have the right to be protected.

I would say at the age of 15. Because that is the period when students in Korea start thinking about the future and college. Students will either give up or keep studying.

Any behaviors that are not considered polite is considered as inappropriate.

Younger -> older (bow down)

If you are younger than someone else, it is not acceptable to disagree. Only those people who are in the higher position, same age or level or friends can disagree with each other.

Insults are expressed through language, because Korean language has the most number of insulting words.

There are many dialects being spoken in Korea. Although the accent, and words are sometimes very different, we all call it Korean Language.

A person is Speaking “well” when he/she comes up with logical approaches. Speaking in Seoul Accent is important too, because if you speak in a regional dialect, you can’t become a news reporter or an anchor. Correct pronunciation of words and no Up and Downs in intonation,

Person with high temper tend to speak with up and down intonation.

People act very politely in Public. Homes? Masks off

It’s the parents job to train children not to speak loud and have rude behavior in public

Authority in Korea is very important, because higher position is everything in Korea.

Outsiders should know that being polite is very important in Korea

Illness and death – I would say its same is America

Illnesses treated? – I don’t know what it means

Koreans believe that eating three times a day is very important.

Koreans hate to discard food, so we’d better finish everything what is on the table. Elders always get to eat first. Unlike American culture, Korean food culture involves what’s called Common plate/ food. We don’t have individual plates. We get to share all the food. The only thing that we may have individually is the rice bowl.

Chinese New Year and Thanksgiving day are the biggest holidays in Korea. All of those two holidays involve family gathering.

Every holidays are important for children, because they need to learn culture, so that they can do the same to their children in the future.

Every holiday requires to prepare differently. Food is different and the games that we play are different as well. Children are expected to do nothing during the holiday, because parents tend to say “not moving is helping us”

Fashion is very important in Korea. Since we don’t believe in Expensive clothing, price of the clothes doesn’t really matter. What is important is how well you can dress.

Since Koreans value beauty and attractiveness, FACE is very important. We are very straightforward about judging someone’s face

Ex) Wow you look uglier today/ You look fatter/ I can see you have gained weight!/ Where is your jawline?/ Pimples all over your face.

Values : ??? I don’t get it

Knowing History and tradition is very important In korea. People who are not aware of the history of Korea are considered uneducated. Each family has it’s own history. It’s usually the school’s job to educate students.

Education in korea is all about being successful when we grow up. Engineer is favored

Korean students don’t get to learn anything from home. Schools and academies do all the teachings

Parental expectations for boys and girls are equal. Parents all want their children to be successful.

Work- productive / Play- time killing

Those works that involves high education are prestigious. Because it shows that the person studied hard in the past

On time- 10 mins before the time

Punctuality is very important, because it tells about the person

Speed is very very very important in korea. Koreans are described as impatient. Because everything is fast and done quickly in korea

Groups are usually organized by role

Everyone is responsible for rain, thunder, floods and hurricanes. But if the damage is too big, the government is responsible for it.

Cows are valued, because beef is the most expensive meat in korea

Dogs, cats are consider appropriate. There is no inappropriate animals actually

Kpop is valued and loved by 10~30 year old people. Those ppl who are older, they love country music.

Any music that involves strong language are considered inappropriate.

Yes, because Korean culture is very different from other cultures.
