o Market analysis (market share, focus groups, customer survey)

AET 4943: Class Project

The purpose of this project is to help you intensely learn about the processes or methods that have been used in the area of operations management or supply chain management. In this project, you will work in a group as part of manufacturing management team. The team will develop a new design or redesign product in order to launch it in the market. The team will use steps in the design process for product development and then create a supply chain plan for the product. There are several submissions and presentations that are required through the whole process.

  1. First summary performance specifications Identify the product which can be either a new product or a redesigned product.

Then follow the first two steps in the design process, idea generation and feasibility study.

In the summary you will need to provide:

  • Description and background of the product

  • Existing product (if any is available), perceptual maps, etc.

  • Feasibility study

    • Market analysis (market share, focus groups, customer survey)

    • Economic analysis (estimated production and development costs, estimated sale volumes, and possible price range for the product – compared to existing products)

    • Technical and strategic analyses (required new technology, new skills, etc.)

  • Performance specification (features of the product that pass the feasibility study and approved for development)

  • Design specification

    • Form design – describe the physical appearance of the product (provide picture of the prototype)

    • Functional design – describe how the product performs include reliability, maintainability, and usability

  • Production design and process plan – describe how the product will be made. Provide bill of material (BOM). Then, create step-by-step instruction of the production processes (process flow chart)

Summary plan for product supply chain In this summary you will provide:

  • Procurement (suppliers either in-house vs. outsource)

  • Distribution networks and logistics

  • Forecasting (estimate the demand of the product)

  • Inventory (develop inventory level and safety stock)

  1. Final presentation and final report

Provide 10-15 minutes presentation and 5 minutes for questions. The presentation will be scheduled on the last week of our class (Dec 5 and 7, 2016). Combine and write final report (5-6 pages) for this project. Cite the resources appropriately using standard APA format. **Make sure to have both in-text reference and formal reference in your final report.**

Example APA:

Ho, Y. C., & Tseng, Y. Y. (2006). A study on order-batching methods of order-picking in a distribution centre with two cross-aisles. International Journal of Production Research, 44(17), 3391-3417.

You can find more information about APA format at http://www.library.cornell.edu/resrch/citmanage/apa

**Failure to provide proper references for any articles or other sources used in your paper will result in 15% reduction for that summary**

5. Peer evaluation:

Peer evaluation is calculated based on your involvement in team assignments. You will receive 50% of your points from what your group receives and the rest will be based on your peer evaluation. Each team member will submit the peer evaluation at the end of semester.
