The content must include following questions:

  • Q1How is an author using a transformation to establish an agenda? To what end?

  • Q2What are the messages that this text is conveying, whether intentionally or not?

About Q1transformation →the transformation of Pauline.

At the beginning of the story, she was set to be an invisible, forgotten character.

However, Pauline locked the meat locker and murdered three men at the end of the story, which is quite different from her character. Maybe the reason for the transformation is the rape case irritated Pauline. I think the author wants Pauline’s behavior to showcase Fleur as a well-rounded protagonist. Thus, Fleur’s female power reappears on Pauline-she revolted and killed the men. In other word, Fleur’s power influenced Pauline.

About Q2: the message conveys: female power

The binary of Fleur’s full character and Pauline’s flat character is obvious.

Fleur is a woman that manifests the female power even from a young age. When Fleur drowned the first time, saving her resulted in the loss of two men who saved her. The narrator states, “But it wasn’t long afterward that those two men disappeared. The first wandered off, and the other jean hat got himself run over by a cart,” (Erdrich 176). The statement demonstrates a mysterious power Fleur as a woman had resulted in the disappearance of persons who saved her from drowning. Female power is also demonstrated in the ability of Fleur to survive from drowning more than once. The author highlights the aspect of Fleur “dressing up like a man” (Erdrich 177) a sort of a surprise to the community. Such is a clear indication of courage and power to stand out and even dress as men do. Female power is further obvious when Fleur decided to leave and not to come back the entire summer just before the plan to throw her out would be executed. Further, everywhere Fleur went, she left a mark. For instance, when she lived a short distance south in Argus during summer, Erdrich narrates that a lot happened; “she almost destroyed that town,” (177).

The power that Fleur had, and especially in her hands, resulted in her being raped……………………………..(follow the paragraph below)

(method: complicating evidence: means something doesn’t not show Fleur’s power directly)

While, unlike Fleur, who worked with the men, Pauline cleaned floors and did housework just like a typical, delicate woman. Obviously, Pauline was unable to help Fleur as a matter of course when Fleur was raped.
