Social Media Marketing

What is Google+?

Google+ is Google’s social media network.

Is Google+ Google’s first social network?

Google+ is not Google’s first attempt at social media. Google has been involved in the development of social networks since 2004, when they introduced Orkut. This product did not gain much popularity in the U.S., but continued to be used in Brazil and India until 2014. Google Wave came out in 2009, and featured email conversations and other collaborative tools. Google Buzz appeared on the Internet in 2010 and enabled users to share email publically as well as privately. Google+ was launched in 2011.

How popular is Google+?

Officially, Google+ has more than 2.5 billion users, which would make it by far the largest social network in the world, with almost twice as many members as Facebook. However, even Google doesn't peddle this line.

The billions of accounts exist because every Gmail address automatically has a corresponding Google+ account, the vast majority of which have never even been logged into. The social network is widely derided as a wasteland, but Google hasn't released any official user numbers recently, so how many people actually actively use Google+?”
