Strength of materials

  1. A solid rigid member loaded at two points is pinned to the wall and is supported by a steel cable of diameter 50 mm attached at E. Find the axial and the deformation in cable. Also, determine the movement of free end of rigid member. The vertical load at free end is 10 kN and at 6m from pin is 20 kN. Take E = 210 GPa for cable. The cable is inclined at 30 deg cw from positive x-axis and the rigid bar is inclined at 37 deg acw from positive x-axis.

  2. A copper bar of 2m length and uniform cross section 1500 mm2 is attached to two fixed supports at its ends at 300 K. Find the stress induced in the bar if the temperature is dropped by 15 deg. .

  3. A composite bar made of copper (left) and aluminum (right). The bar is stress free at 300 K. The temperature is dropped such that the stress in the right portion is reaches 150 MPa. Find the drop in the temperature if (a) both supports are rigid (b) right support yield (move) by 0.25 mm.

Take

  1. A hollow steel cylinder and a solid copper cylinder are arranged as shown in the Fig. Determine the temperature rise of the entire system required to place all the load on the copper cylinder. The cover plate is rigid.

  1. A rigid bar AD is supported by a brass bar BC and steel bar DE. The temperature of bar BC is lowered by 25 K and that of bar DE is raised by 25 K. Find the stress in bar BC (length 300 mm) and DE (length 250 mm).
