Prison overcrowding

Overcrowding in prisons exist in poor and rich nations and in all form of prison setups and systems. Overcrowding lies on a wide range of different aspects after weighing interest of the security, the administration of the prison, prisoners’ rights and economics. Overcrowding can then be seen in situations such as inadequate facilities to provide sufficient healthcare, work and education, inadequate sanitary and kitchen facilities, food or any constructive activity and insufficient staff members to ensure safety of prisoners and the public (Trebilcock et al., 2008). So overcrowding in prisons is an important issue and should be solved, and this paper focuses on the causes of overcrowding in prisons, the effects of prison overcrowding to the inmates and the public, and the solutions and ways of reducing overcrowding in prison.

This research will cover the following.

  1. The causes of overcrowding in prisons.

  1. Harsh punishments may be a reason or a cause of overcrowding in prisons. The harsh punishments like life imprisonment or serving long time for non-serious offense.

  2. Pretrial detention also could be a cause of the overcrowding in prisons. That means detainees who were not tried yet for their offenses due to delayed processing of cases in the court.

  1. The effects of overcrowding in prisons.

  1. Reduced service provision. Overcrowding can result in reduction in services provision in the prison, which affect the set standards for sanitary equipment, medical treatment, training, educational and rehabilitation programs.

  2. Violation among detainees. Prisoners are going to be more violent and everyone will be competing to have his own space in prison and that is hard to control.

  1. The solution for overcrowding in prisons.

  1. The perfect solution in my belief is “probation and parole” that means release more prisoners and rehabilitate them instead of keeping them in prisons. However this may sound little dangerous but actually it is not, because those prisoners who were released are not going to be with serious offenses, only prisoners who have offenses like drug uses and alcoholic problems and these kinds of non-serious offenses only. Instead of keeping them in prisons and may make them worse, we may help them to have a better and organized life.

  2. The non-perfect solution is building more prisons. This may sound great on paper because prisoners are going to have more space in prisons but actually it is not in real life because it is going to coast a lot of money.

Finally, I believe that overcrowding in prisons is a serious issue and it should be solved. There are many causes of this issue such as harsh punishments and pretrial detention. Also have a lot of effects, like less security, and violation among prisoners. There are a lot of solutions to stop overcrowding in prisons, and I believe that focusing on releasing and rehabilitate prisoners with non-serious offenses would help stop overcrowding in prisons.
