MATH 110

Math is Useless”

By Alan Bass in Math Study Skills

I labeled this section “Math is Useless” to get your attention. Now that I have it, completely banish the idea that “math is useless from you mind forever”. If our nation (or planet) could pick one subject for everyone to be really good at, it would be without any doubt, mathematics. Math is the foundation for every science. Math is the ultimate in critical and analytical thinking. Math fires rockets into space, shows insurance companies what is fair price, tells psychologists that therapy X works and the drug Y doesn’t. It is true that nobody is going to hire you to factor a polynomial or solve a linear equation. But people are also not going to hire you to write essays on the Civil War, memorize every bone in the human arm, or draw sentence trees.

So why bother with an education at all? Well, when employers see a college degree they know the candidate has been exposed to and successfully assimilated a general, well-rounded body of knowledge. A college degree shows discipline, character, and sharp thinking skills. Apparently, that’s pretty important. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, college graduates will earn 2.1 million more over the course of their life than high school graduates. Assuming that your degree takes four years, that’s like getting paid $2,625 for every day that you attend college! Work hard! Work Smart!

“An individual, who is active in higher learning, soon becomes an individual active in higher earning.” –Michael Gulliver
