Analysis

When a group is operating in line with organizational goals, cohesiveness is generally considered a positive. However, Nokia can have potential issues arise as a result of this increased cohesion. Increased social communication between groups can lead to a waste of company resources. Time can be lost while group members spend excessive amounts of time socializing. Furthermore, the group can become isolated among other groups. Top teams at Nokia may begin focusing on their own performance rather than contributing to the organization as a whole.

Nokia’s group norms include high levels of respect and communication within the team. The groups are incredibly cohesive and the group members work towards creating synergy. Nokia has implemented these teams from the top of their organization to the bottom. The way the company designs an ideal group is not always the best method; a lack of deviance allows for the group to remain in a state of inertia. Deviance builds change and growth which Nokia has failed to consider within their teams.
