Writing a Quality paper

Hispanic Paradox Extra Credit (1-2 page write up):

You can EITHER attend Rick Rogers talk or read the attached article. I think the talk will be more interesting in terms of answering the following questions, but I want to make sure everyone gets access to extra credit and the Fenelon paper is very good!

Here are some basic references for everyone that will help with your write up!

Wiki (this one is actually pretty good and factually correct):

Good BBC short article:

OK! These are good refs to help you but you will either need to attend Roger’s talk (March 23) OR read Andrew Fenelon’s paper (attached as pdf) and answer some questions for me to get your extra credit points:

General questions for both Rogers/Fenelon options (see above links for this part):

  1. What is the Hispanic Paradox and who coined the term in the 80’s (hint: he goes by the nickname “Kokos”)?

  2. What is selective migration/the healthy migrant effect and why would it matter for the Hispanic Paradox?

Some Specific Questions you might cover given your talk attendance or journal article reading (*NOTE* these are the most important to get the credit as they show you’ve done the more challenging work):

  1. What specific feature of the paradox is this research covering (age group/health behavior) and why is it important?

  2. What do the findings of the presented research reflect? Do they support or refute the paradox?

  3. How might nativity (whether someone is an immigrant or US native born) play into the findings in how they are similar or different from other findings on the paradox?

  4. Based on this research (and the links provided above) do you think the paradox will be visible in another 30 or 50 years?
