Learning activities include lectures, site visits, networking events, and applied learning assignments.

In completing this course, students will demonstrate an acceptable understanding of

  • Key contributions of the HR function for successful organizations

  • Critical competencies for successful HR professionals

  • Different career opportunities within areas of the HR specialization and how to obtain them

  • Mentor engagement and valuable opportunities for active networking

  • HR career development strategies

  • Key practices and process of effective consulting

    1. B) Class discussions: Similar to course text basically

    2. C) Team Consulting Project: This is what we did for the project so you can know what Insights are useful for future HR career planning:

    3. E) Site Visits: We also visited two different companies, one of them was The Honest Company

HR From the Outside In(the book of our class) discusses key competencies for the future of human resources. The first competency is being a “Strategic Positioner” – thinking and acting from the outside in. In order to master this competency it is critical that HR professionals understand the business and the environment in which it operates.

In this class you will have the opportunity to apply your consulting skills to evaluate an organization within the context of the business that it operates in, its culture and how the human resources department contributes to the success of its strategic objectives.

Your team-consulting project will include the following: (Here me and my group teammates chose an organization called Global SPN, and did a presentation and wrote a report on it).

  1. Identify and obtain a commitment from a client organization with between 50 -500 (approximate number) employees.

  • Develop a regular working schedule with appropriate representatives of your client organization, meeting with the client as often as needed (e.g., three or four times).

  • Interview representatives within the client organization to gather information.

  • Submit a written report (8-10 pages) that discusses and incorporates the following elements.
Feel free to expand on areas you deem relevant and appropriate. This is due on April 10.

    1.  Background on the organization

    2.  What business is the organization in (how do they make their money)?

    3.  What are their business objectives and what is their strategy to achieve those?

    4.  Describe their company culture and what impact it has on the business

    5.  Describe the HR organizational structure (including who HR reports into)

    6.  How does HR support the organization’s business objectives? What is their HR strategy?

    7.  What are some challenges that HR deals with in the organization?

    8.  What initiatives does the HR department plan to implement in the next 1-3 years?

    9.  What recommendations would you make, if any, so that HR can further contribute to the
overall organizational goals?

    10. D) Site Visits : We visited the Honest Company in Los Angeles

    11. E) Guest Speakers : We had networking guest speakers (don’t need to talk about that)

    12. F) Networking Assignment : I went to an event
 related to HR.

    13. Note: For the above part, part I, you are just reading my material from the course, which I provided for you, and basically write your general insight useful for your future HR career planning gained from that.

  • II. Mentor Engagement. In this section you will list the name, title, organization, phone number, and e- mail address of at least one HR or other professional who may serve as a mentor in providing experience- based guidance for your future career planning. You will be required to meet with this person at least once near the end of the semester to share with him or her your tentative career development action plans following this class. Include in this section why you selected this particular mentor and what you learned from this mentor in your advisement meeting (which could be done over lunch or at the mentor’s office), as well as your overall impressions of this mentoring process and experience. In this visit with your mentor you would likely find it very worthwhile to learn about how he or she “made it” in his or her career, and obtain specific recommendations (e.g., what to do and what to avoid) based on the mentor’s career experience. Also indicate your ideas and tentative plans for filling future mentoring needs in your career. (FOR THIS PART, CHECK UPLOADED “MEETING WITH MENTOR” DOC TO WRITE THIS PART- the upload is not accurate because it talks about different topic as I have used that for another assignment, however, it is same mentor, just change the wordings as if its related to providing experience- based guidance for my future career planning (my major business management)

  • III. Action Plans for Future Career Development. Based on the above and your notes from class sessions and readings, as well as from the feedback and input you received from your mentor interview, end this report with a thoughtful discussion of (a) your immediate specific action plans, (b) short-term (within the next three years) action plans, and (c) longer-term plans for managing your career and achieving your personal and professional goals (don’t forget to think about your personal life goals as well—don’t let them get lost in the professional plan!). Also include your plans for ongoing professional development and networking (such as professional association membership, graduate school, certification, etc.), as well as an analysis of any obstacles that you anticipate facing in the future and how you will surmount them.

  • (THIS PART, PLEASE CHECK UPLOAD “ACTION PLANS”, MAKE SURE FOR THIS PART YOU ARE MORE SPECIFIC WITH THE SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM PLANS AS THEY ARE NOT SPECIFIC IN THE DOC I GAVE TO YOU)
