Annotated Bibliography Assignment

As you are working on your final project, you will be accumulating several sources which may/may not be useful to you. An annotated bibliography will allow you to keep track of these sources, as well as evaluate them. Also, since your annotated bibliography is due before your final assignment, it should hamper procrastination, and it will allow me to help you if you are unsure what direction your final paper should take.

As we read in our Norton text, there are a few parts to an annotated bibliography. First, you must correctly cite your source according to the MLA format. The second part of the entry is the annotation. In the annotation, you should provide a short synopsis of the source. Also, you should provide some sort of analysis of the text; you can comment on the source’s overall worth, validity or effectiveness as it pertains to the topic you have chosen for your final essay. You should have at least 7 entries in your annotated bibliography. Five of your sources should be academic (not popular). You may use primary sources (interviews, field notes, etc.) if they are relevant and can be included in your paper.

Below I have included an example of an annotated bibliography entry that I did:

Ede, Lisa S. "On Audience and Composition." College Composition and Communication 30.3 (1979): 291-5. Print. Ede argues that there needs to be greater emphasis placed on assignments in the composition classroom. Ede discusses the problems of egocentrism in writing (writer-based prose), writing for a peer audience, and writing for the teacher. Ede offers two solutions: provide a situation (and therefore a context and audience) for your students, or allow the students to create their own rhetorical situation. In my class, I will definitely use the first option. I plan to provide a context for each writing assignment, because I believe it helps students understand why and for whom they are writing. I had not considered the second option, but I find it appealing and might use it, as well.
