Massimo Vignelli was an Italian graphic designer and industrial designer known for designing the signage and map for the New York City subway. A prolific designer, he mastered design in many disciplines including package, furniture, showroom, and warehouse design. Vignelli was primarily a modernist and worked with designs that were simple but effective (Famous Graphic Designers).

Cave paintings appeared in Lascaux, France as early as 15,000 BC. Early humans most likely created these primitive paintings to record the world around them (The Art Institute of Pittsburgh).

The Cueva de las Manos, which means “Cave of Hands,” is located in Patagonia Region of Argentina. The images in the caves are stencils of human hands as well as paintings of different animals. It has been estimated that the paintings were created between 13,000 and 9,500 years ago (UNESCO). They are similar to the paintings found in Lascaux, France.

For the execution of the spread, Helvetica Neue was selected. The font is simple, like the designs of Vignelli, and timeless, like the cave paintings depicted in the spread. Here is a sample of Helvetica Neue:

Vignelli once said, “If you do it right, it will last forever” (AZ Quotes). Clearly, the primitive artists of Argentina were doing something right. Their paintings have stood the test of time and continue to fascinate humans thousands of years later. Like Vignelli’s designs, the paintings were simple, elegant, and timeless.
