Discussion about Descartes.

Descartes realized that he has many false opinions and beliefs. Because of this, he decided that in order for him to arrive at a certain conclusion and to create a foundation he must first doubt everything he believed. That is, until he was able to be certain that those beliefs were true. To make it easier for him to go through his new philosophy, he decided to throw out all his beliefs and eliminate external manipulations such as God. To Descartes, believing in a god meant perceiving the world in a different way and he believed that the belief could also lead to thinking in a complete incorrect way. This observation made by Descartes did not mean he doubted God (or as Descartes also called him, the "Evil Genius") but simply that by making an extreme accusation, he was making it easier for others to understand his way of thinking.

Because he was doubting everything, Descartes set out in order to discover things that count not be doubted. Descartes basically starts his life over again, re-thinking and questions everything. The very first think that Descartes cannot doubt is that he in fact exists. After some debate, he does conclude that he is a living and breathing entity and his existence is not questionable. Descartes concluded that he existed based on his thoughts. This thought process of his is what led to the phrase "I think, therefore I am."

Some practical lessons in which have relevance to everyday life would be pretty much any mass media, especially one run and thriving by community involvement. Both of my parents, for as long as I can remember, have been wary of me using and interacting with the on-line world. I was always told to not trust what I read on the Internet and to be wary of anyone I was talking to. Just recently, the social media website Facebook has been under fire for the amount of false news going around the site. Previously, Facebook has not limited the "news" that had been posted, however, large corporations such as Apple, Google, etc. are taking a stance and requiring that social networking sites do some fact checking or some way to help readers realize when the news article they are reading is fake. The CEO of Facebook has very recently announced a new educational tool that actually does help users spot fake news so they do not read it and think that is it real. One pretty drastic example of fake news can be found right after Trump was elected into office. After President Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election, a news article was written about the spike in teen trangender suicides. The article stated that, because they felt unsafe with Donald Trump as president, they committed suicide. However, a further investigation found that this article had no factual evidence and there was no spike in suicide rates after Trump's history. Doubting an article like this, or any news on-line for that matter, can save someone the embarrassment of repeating the news that is later deemed fake. On-line is a dangerous and un-trustworthy place and everything on-line should be taken with a grain of salt.
