RE: CHANGE TO THE HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH CURRICULUM

English curriculum is one of the best among others in the education system despite the fact that, it is so challenging to the learners and teachers as well. For instance, Mrs. Joyce a high school English teacher is using all the pieces included but still finds a hard time with the system. The challenge is that all the work provided in the curriculum cannot allow the syllabus be completed in time since it is much and requires a lot of work. Therefore, the aim of this letter is to request for some amendments in the curriculum.

Due to time restrictions, one of the works in the curriculum should be eliminated. For example, Oats story should be left out in this system because it is more of art than English. However, it is appropriate to the audience and pleasing to the ear. On the other hand, it entails some ambiguous words that students may not be familiar with. Nevertheless, being a story full of love songs, the student's mind may be polluted that some of them may indulge in immoral behaviors. One of the love songs in the noted story is "all our love" which has nothing to add to the student's mind other than changing their ethical codes.

As a matter of fact, the story is not relevant to the high school students because it is all about love songs as can be seen. On the contrary, the artist in the story may make some students start the journey of being a musician; which may not be of great help to the students. In reality, such stories are majorly meant for adults who knows well what love is. According to the English curriculum, such stories are not in any way related to English. Therefore, a lot of emphases is supposed to be put in this fact because it may lower the performance in English. Some students may be good even if the syllabus is left the way it is, but some who are slow learners may not be able to catch up with others; hence weakening their achievement ability in the noted area.

By the same token, the story is immoral itself as it points out that the artist in the story has a wife and still goes ahead to Mary another one as can be seen in the story "Oats has been married twice." This, therefore, may bring a wicked thought in the mind of a student hence ruining their studies. In real life situation, most books and movies have led to the destruction of many students because they twist mind and become addictive to the readers hence not applicable for high school learners. In addition, the book format and flow are not so clear hence difficult to understand. Even the teachers may not be able to understand better the story due to the bulk of work they have.

Removal of the named story out of the curriculum may even give the teacher’s easy time of teaching well the available units. In the school's program, the syllabus is supposed to be accomplished early enough so as to give the students enough time for studies. However, in cases where the workload is bulky, the learning process is interrupted. For that reason, Oats story should be removed from the English package.

One of the themes present in the story is love. All over the book, the known guitarist Oats started singing love songs, and as can be seen, most of the songs in the novel are about romance. Therefore the theme itself, disqualifies the book to be regarded as one of the stories that students learn in the English curriculum. Therefore such stories are not appropriate to be read by the high school students.

The book also has minimal uses of styles such as satire, onomatopoeia, rhetoric questions, among many others hence making it a non-English story. Named styles are so encouraged in English since they make the students have a broad thought. Broad thinking may help them pass other subjects as well hence suitable.

In a nutshell, the Oats is an interesting story adored by different individuals from various background. However, in high school set up, it is never appropriate. As discussed above, the English curriculum is so fixed with a lot of work that needs to be looked into. In fact, some of the works in English program is not necessary for the high school students hence should be removed. As discusses above Oats only consist of love as one of the themes of the story. In addition, the book only carries several love songs that may bring harm than good to the students. In addition, it is noted that such stories may change the moral behavior of the students making them have immoral manners. Therefore, the board of education should check on the ways of eliminating the Oats story from the high school English curriculum.
